I thought, I know Max, this will be easy. I didn’t know the half of him. I knew him as the lovely husband of my amazing quilting teacher, Val. He used to carry our sewing machines out to our cars. Nothing was too much trouble. He even offered to sharpen our cutters. And that wicked sense of humour catches me out every time. “How did you sleep last night?” I ask. “In the bed.” comes the reply, quick as lightening. No time for small talk. Yet there is always chit chat and banter, especially with the staff in Chaffey. They love him because he lets them know he appreciates everything they do for him. And even I get cheerfully greeted “Hello Princess”.
