Truda Tune

in conversation with Carmela Tyson
It is what it is!

Truda is a local lady, born at Mildura Base Hospital on 5 May 1931. Her Mum was fond of saying that Truda was the first white baby born there – although Truda has some doubts about the story! Her Mother, Martha, was forty-one when Truda was born. On our last catch-up, discussing the final draft, Truda noticed that the folder I had brought to hold my documents had the brand name ‘OTTO’ on the cover. “How fitting! It’s the given name of my grandfather, Otto Abramowski”. Truda’s parents were Martha Miranda Dorothea Newton, affectionately called ‘Marti’, and George Alfred Newton. George Newton’s first wife had died. Martha was the daughter of Dr Otto Louis Moritz Abramowski, one of Mildura’s early white settlers. She had a twin brother, Otto, but he died of heat stroke at six months of age.
